PA Autonomy

Due to the shortage of doctors and the increasing number of patients with health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, a number of states have granted PAs more autonomy in order to increase access to patient care. In January, New Jersey became the 29th state to get rid of countersignature requirement and removed the rule that required PAs to have a “continuing or intermittent presence” with a collaborating physician while working in a hospital or inpatient setting.
